“Then sang Moses and the people Israel this song.” [Exodus 15:1]
Rabbi Meir of Kabrin points out that the word translated as “sang” actually reads as the future tense – Hebrew yashir. The early rabbis already suggested that the verse refers to a time in the future when all Israel will again sing a song of redemption.
The world has never known optimists as great as the Jews. No matter what befell us, we could always sing of faith. No matter how dark the times, we could always imagine a better future. The words of the Biblical prophets always lit the dark passages of our ways.
The crossing of the Reed Sea, at exactly the moment when the Egyptian army appeared to have the Israelites cornered, shows that we need never abandon hope. The Jewish people will always have reason to praise God for their salvation.
